A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11877769B2) discloses a medical device system that includes a rotational atherectomy device with an elongated flexible drive shaft and an abrasive section. The device is driven by an electric motor controlled by a unit with a memory, processor, and current sensor. The control unit can generate real-time plots of current vs time during treatment passes, allowing operators to monitor the progress of the atherectomy treatment. Thresholds for motor current and rate of change of current are set, and if these are exceeded simultaneously, the processor can detect an imminent stall of the abrasive section within the lesion. The system can annunciate the stall, interrupt voltage to the motor, and provide recommendations to modify the treatment based on the sensed motor current.

Furthermore, the system can overlay plots of current vs sensed axial position, allowing operators to track the progression of the treatment more accurately. Recommendations for modifying the treatment based on motor current can include adjusting motor rotational speed, linear traverse speed, or stopping rotation of the motor. The processor can also determine when the treatment is complete and provide recommendations for additional treatment passes if needed. By utilizing real-time data and advanced monitoring capabilities, this medical device system aims to enhance the efficiency and safety of rotational atherectomy procedures, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
