Innova announces Laguna system’s early commercial use

Innova Vascular has reported the successful early commercial use of its Laguna Thrombectomy System in patients.

The Laguna Thrombectomy System comprises two devices and is designed to remove blood clots from patients’ vessels.

It includes the Malibu Aspiration Catheter and the Laguna Clot Retriever and has been used by physicians at UCLA Medical Center and Providence St Joseph in California, US.

Both the Malibu Aspiration Catheter System and the Laguna Clot Retriever System received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration last year.

These two devices are intended for application in the peripheral vasculature.

UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine clinical research vice chair and interventional radiology and cardiology professor Dr John Moriarty said: “The Laguna Thrombectomy System is a valuable addition to the existing therapeutic options for venous thromboembolism.

“The system offers excellent navigability and ease of use enabling operators at all skill levels to remove clots efficiently. It addresses the need for large volume clot removal in a range of vessel sizes in various anatomical locations within the peripheral vasculature.”

The Malibu Aspiration Catheter is engineered with a gradient structural design and a hydrophilic coating to enhance navigation through complex vascular structures.

It is offered in various sizes, including 24Fr, 20Fr, 16Fr, and 12Fr outer diameters, to accommodate different clot morphologies and vessel sizes.

This catheter can be used independently or in combination with the Laguna Clot Retriever.

The Laguna Clot Retriever features a self-expanding laser-cut Nitinol design and is available in two diameters.

It is specifically designed to maximise clot capture and facilitate circumferential clot ingress, with radial strength and cell sizes tailored to optimise performance.

Providence St Joseph Hospital interventional radiology chief Dr Raj Khalsa said: “Beautifully engineered device with easy prep, excellent trackability in challenging anatomies, and highly effective clot extraction. The design, with simplicity in mind, is a significant advantage in high-risk procedures.

“With increasing awareness of venous thromboembolism, the Innova system joins the ranks of a select few large-bore thrombectomy systems, with a remarkably efficient solution that offers substantial value to the healthcare system.
