Heidelberg’s ANTERION platform gets US FDA approval

Ophthalmic imaging company Heidelberg Engineering has secured US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its ANTERION platform.

ANTERION is an all-in-one upgradeable platform to transform anterior segment diagnostics and streamline practice workflow.

It combines IOL power calculation, biometry with corneal topography and tomography, high-resolution imaging and anterior chamber metrics for a day-to-day clinical routine.

With its additional features, such as patented eye tracking and composite imaging technologies, the platform will help deliver high image quality and allow eyecare professionals to perform anterior segment examinations.

It also allows professionals to acquire key measurements through high-resolution swept-source OCT images to support clinical decision-making.

Heidelberg Engineering managing director Arianna Schoess Vargas said: “Building upon our previous CE-marking, we are thrilled that the ANTERION platform is now available to eye care providers across the US.

“We believe this device complements our current portfolio of products and arms anterior segment-focused practices with the comprehensive data needed to support diagnostic decisions that ultimately improve patient care.”

The ANTERION platform’s core is the Imaging App, which focuses on the anterior segment’s high-resolution visualisation.

The app, which secured FDA clearance in November 2021, is designed to deliver revealing OCT images to aid eye doctors in the diagnosis and management of anterior segment alterations.

Heidelberg noted that the functionality of the platform has been expanded with FDA-cleared apps that have been designed to meet various clinical needs. These apps include the Cornea App, the Metrics App and the Cataract App.

ANTERION clinical trial principal investigator Mitchell Dul said: “We were impressed by the high-quality images and measurements of the anterior segment that ANTERION offers. Its multi-faceted utility, high resolution, rapid image acquisition and intuitive user interface will make this device an invaluable tool for clinical practice.”
